The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Kolkata industrialists Ashok Kumar Todi and his brother Pradeep Kumar Todi in the Rizwanur Rehman suicide case. A bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and P Sathasivam rejected the Central Bureau of Investigation's argument that the accused will influence the investigation if freed on bail. The duo has been accused by the CBI of abetting the suicide of Rizwanur Rehman after he married Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside a Calcutta high court order for registration of murder case against prominent industrialist Ashok Kumar Todi and some police officers in the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman.
Todi is the prime accused in the case. Todi's interroogation by CBI Joint director Arun Kumar and DIG S K Golcha began at 6.30 am and lasted for over ten hours. However, Todi refused to speak to the media when he left the CBI office here after the questioning. nehasish, a director in Todi's company, was questioned for an hour. The former cricketer had taken the industrialist's brother Pradip to then police chief Prasun Mukherjee to lodge a complaint about Priyanka's marriage
Appearing for the CBI, Solicitor General, Gopal Subramanium said the high court order was unheard of and in blatant contravention of the Criminal Procedure Code since the agency had already filed the chargesheet in the matter.
The family of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman described as a "setback" the Supreme Court's order not allowing murder charge to be framed against his industrialist father-in-law Ashok Kumar Todi. "It is a little setback for us that the Supreme Court has ordered that a fresh investigation with a murder charge being instituted by the CBI is not needed and the trial will be held for abetment to suicide," said Rukbanur Rahman.
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday began interrogating industrialist Ashok Todi in connection with the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman, who married Todi's daughter Priyanka.
Justice Dutta directed Ruqbanur's counsel and also the CBI lawyer to file affidavits stating their opposition within three weeks of the plea for immediate circulation of the report. The court gave two weeks to the police officers and Todi to file their affidavits in reply to the opposition.
Officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday interrogated Priyanka Todi, daughter of prime accused Ashok Todi and widow of Muslim computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances a few days after his marriage. According to CBI sources, Priyanka fully cooperated with the officers and answered all their questions. In the last four days, the CBI has interrogated more than 20 people and has obtained helpful clues.
Both Rizwanur and Priyanka had conveyed a threat to his life in a letter written on September 3 to then Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Ajoy Kumar.
